It has been mandated by the constitution to give the government employees respective bonuses during Christmas and Year-End Holidays. This bonus is in form of the ‘13th month’ and another extra cash. For public school teachers which are under the management of the Department of Education, every December is really that most wonderful time of the year.
According to a report published in the Inquirer by Jocelyn Uy, the Teachers Dignity Coalition (TDC) emphasizes that this December 2016, 720, 000 teachers working for the different government public schools will receive a bonus which is twice what they had last year. This year, they are bound to receive a cash amount of 34, 000 to 64, 000. Moreover, according to the TDC Chair Benjo Basas, a teacher with a basic salary of 19, 077 will receive bonuses in forms of Performance-Based Bonus (PBB) which is at least P5, 000, a cash gift of P5, 000 also, a Productivity Enhancement Incentive Bonus equal to P5, 000, and a complete 13th month pay which is equal to 19, 077. All in all, all teachers in that level are bound to receive at least P53, 154 in cash.
These bonuses, still according to the TDC are in line with the significant salary increase in the Teacher’s basic salary this year. The Performance Based Bonus is the usual merit-based incentive program of the government which aims to give bonuses to exemplary employees who delivers and carries their tasks in a very responsible manner. According to the Salary Standardization Law, PBB can range from 5, 000 to 35, 000 depending on the severity of being an exemplar employee. But for regular teachers, Chair Basas said that it would be impossible to get a PBB more than 5, 000. The Productivity Enhancement Incentive on the other hand aims to encourage the employees to do better in the future.
Currently, the TDC pushes for the immediately release of these funds. “As for the year-end bonus (YEB) we call on the DBM to immediately release said amount as well as the PBB so it could help the teachers in year-end expenses, especially those affected by typhoons in the North. As per guidelines PBB should be given by October & YEB by November,” TDC said.
As a closing statement, Chair Basas said TDC will do its best to give those bonuses to teh Teachers in the soonest time possible.
